Interview with Leapsy CTO: Optical design patent increases the field of view of AR glasses by 30%

For AR, the field of view is very important, and the AR world must be seamlessly integrated with the real world.
For example, Microsoft’s HoloLens, which is already a better AR headset on the market, but the field of view is only 34 degrees. The “thermal imaging AR headset” designed by “Leapsy” uses a high-definition prism optical scheme to expand the FOV to 45 degrees.

At the beginning of 2012, Guan Chengcheng was engaged in the development and design of mobile cinema products. At that time, the YouTube system hardware and software platform were not perfect and open enough, and there was no clear concept of AR and VR. He was always thinking about how to design a product for watching movies.

Because the immersive experience cannot allow users to stick to the length of a movie, the R&D team of Guan Chengcheng’s company has developed a head-mounted mobile device that can see the outside environment when watching movies. Based on this, he had many ideas related to augmented reality in his mind, and he began to think about entrepreneurship.

Guan Chengcheng thought about a situation like this: For example, a system is placed on the wall of the home, and only people with glasses can see the picture on the wall. This concept of augmented reality and plane detection was not favored at the time, but his colleague Wang Bowen at the time agreed with him. Bowen Wang has served as a senior director of technology research and development department in technology companies such as MediaTek and has extensive experience in IC design, hardware and software research and development. The two founded “Leapsy” in 2015, with Wang Bowen as CEO and Guan Chengcheng as CTO. This year, Chen Jiajing, who has 10 years of Wall Street financial industry experience and VR/AR entrepreneurial experience, joined the team as CSO.

“Leapsy” can provide customized mass-produced AR headset hardware and software. At the same time, the team’s optical design can increase the FOV (field of view) based on the current VR/AR headset products on the market. 20%~30%. Our core advantage is to optimize the optical design, improve the production yield of optical modules, and reduce costs; at the same time, the technical scope covers the entire process of AR headset development and can provide customized services to end customers.

After the establishment of the company, we started to develop the first AR glasses-thermal imaging AR headset without stopping. The glasses use American industrial-grade thermal imaging modules combined with AR headsets, and support voice, natural gestures, button control, and stereo sound. We independently research and develop high-definition prism optical solutions to achieve low-cost mass production with a FOV (field of view) of 45 degrees.

“Thermal Imaging AR Glasses” can convert infrared light that is invisible to the naked eye into temperature values ​​and display them for industrial inspection. Users can not only see the images played in the glasses, but also see the real external environment at the same time. “At that time, we thought that AR could gradually enter the B-end industry application. Therefore, our purpose of designing AR glasses is to directly improve the convenience of work and life.” Guan Chengcheng said.

For example, in the logistics industry, this AR glasses can detect the temperature of logistics goods in a non-contact manner. When the goods pass through customs, if the surface temperature is lower than 20 degrees Celsius, it can be considered that there are ice cubes inside, and the goods are frozen food, and the staff can handle them quickly. In the medical field, if the influenza virus spreads in a large area, in order to prevent the spread of the epidemic, AR glasses can be used to quickly determine the body temperature of the crowd in dense crowds such as airports.

According to Guan Chengcheng, “Leapsy” has jointly deployed AR tourism industry with Tongcheng Travel through AR sharing glasses on May 19th. The two parties have signed a three-year cooperation agreement, which will provide targeted services for many tourist attractions across the country. For the interactive AR content, the Spring and Autumn Park in Changzhou, Jiangsu is currently used as a pilot scenic spot, and the rent is 50 yuan.

In July 2017, “Leapsy” completed an angel round of financing of 15 million yuan, and the investors were individual investors. At this stage, “Leapsy” plans to raise 30 million yuan in Pre-A round. The funds are mainly used for optical research and development, followed by hardware system research and development, and also invest heavily in tourism and industrial inspection industries.

Next, Guan Chengcheng and his team will be deeply involved in the infrared thermal imaging and tourism industries, using self-developed patented solutions to increase the SKUs of existing optical products on the market, contacting Tencent, NetEase and other top technology companies to develop hardware Ways to reach cooperation. In terms of the promotion of shared AR glasses, we hope to be able to land in 10 more scenic spots within six months, so that more tourists can enjoy the service experience of shared AR glasses.
